Symposium 2008 – Role
From 23 to 25 January 2008 we are inviting you as experts from Germany, the neighbouring countries and the USA to speak in an atmosphere of friendship and factual orientation about the role played by music education for our concert halls. Almost all of us have had wide-ranging experience in this field over the past few years. It will enliven and optimise our work if we can exchange views on visions and successes, as well as the limits of music education.
The symposium addresses the current debate on the role of music education for concert halls – two trains of thought are engaged in a productive dispute: the one position sees music education as a new, effective means of ensuring good capacity utilisation quotas for the concert halls. The other sees the halls in the role of cultural educators and musical centres of cities and society
Both positions are justified and must be taken into consideration by the concert halls today, which raises numerous questions:
How must a concert hall be rooted in the cultural life of the city? Which partnerships can it cultivate and which partners are reliable in the long term? What stand does a concert hall take between educational work and “classic” concert schedules, between music education and tourism strategies? Which or how many target groups can it reach? Which structural, personnel and fi nancial prerequisites does good music education need? Can music education serve as fundraising?
Concept
The symposium is inviting concert hall managers, chief dramatic advisors, orchestra managers, directors of music education programmes and experts from politics, media and the music scene for two days to discuss the situation and development prospects of music education. To kick off the expert talks, a total of seven concert halls from the USA, England, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Germany will be presenting special aspects of their music education programmes in order to fan out the broad spectrum of approaches and experiences. Based on the insights thus gained into existing practice, further ideas are to be developed jointly.
Goals
The focus is on creative approaches to music education such as the innovative use of media, visitor loyalty programmes / addressing new target groups or the self-perception of concert halls and its surrounding cultural scene. Paths and obstacles, opportunities and limitations, as well as possible contents of music education are also the subject of the symposium – as is the question as to which course must be set today in the fi eld of music education for the future success of concert halls programmes and concert music.
